Doula comes from a greek word and means "a woman who serves". Today, doula refers to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during, and just after birth.
Women have always been attended by other women in childbirth and the postpartum period. It is only in our current society that we have moved away from this essential tradition. Doulas bridge the gap, providing education, support, and encouragement about the journey from womanhood into motherhood.
